The vote succeeded despite objections from two different vantage points: a minority of board members thought the vote shouldn’t be taken until the complete contract has been agreed to, and some residents said the raises were excessive given the district’s poor standardized test scores, Northjersey.com said.
As often happens with teacher contracts, many comments reduced the issue to “pro teacher” or “anti teacher.” About 100 attended the meeting in the cafeteria of Dr. John Grieco Elementary School, many wearing red t-shirts that said “ETA.”
There was also an issue of unknown costs raised in connection with an Affordable Care Act tax scheduled to go into effect in 2018. Trustee Glenn Garrison said the cost is expected to be between $600,000 and $700,000. But Trustee Carol Feinstein countered that the tax isn’t certain, and if is imposed the board has the right to reopen the contract with the union.
